Bush promises U.S. help in investigating Rwanda genocide
font size

U.S. President George W. Bush promised on Wednesday to help investigate the 1994 genocide that killed about a half million people in Rwanda.

"There is no question the genocide in Rwanda was a real tragedy. It is one of the most significant tragedies in modern history," Bush said during a meeting with visiting Rwanda President Paul Kagame.

"To the extent that he wants out help in finding certain perpetuators of crimes we will be glad to do so," Bush said.

Bush showed appreciation for Kagame and his government that " has worked hard to reconcile, help people reconcile the tragedy at all levels of society."

The Rwanda example "shows what is possible when people work hard on reconciliation," Bush added.

Kagame thanked Bush for U.S. support in sending troops to Darfur, dealing with HIV/AIDS, supporting private sector investments and building infrastructure programs.
