Since Lenovo acquired the Personal Computer (PC) section of IBM, IBM has become the second largest shareholder of Lenovo Group. However, it seems now that IBM does not want to be the second largest shareholder any more. They may opt to retreat totally from Lenovo.
Lenovo announcd May 30 it has changed the agreement signed with IBM, which forbid sales of its shares. According to the new agreement, since May 25, IBM can transfer the ownership of two-thirds of Lenovo's shares, which they hold. Since November 1, 2007, they can transfer all their shares in Lenovo.
According to the original agreement, IBM cannnot transfer a third of their Lenovo's shares till May 1, 2006 and the remaining two-thirds till May 1, 2007.
Lenovo says in its statement that allowing IBM to reduce their Lenovo stakes can alleviate its regulatory responsibility. But Lenovo did not specify what the regulatory responsibility is.
