Suspected epidemic disease detected in quake-hit Indonesia
font size

The mobile hospital of the Chinese relief team in Indonesia's quake-hit Bantul regency has detected one suspected case of bacteria diarrhea Thursday.

If confirmed, the case will be the first reported epidemic case in Bantul, the area hardest-hit by the 5.9-magnitude earthquake, according to Zhao Heping, head of the China International Search and Rescue Team.

The person with suspected bacteria diarrhea is a 17-year-old boy named Didia Santosa from Conden Jexis of Bantul. Zhao said the patient has the symptoms of cold shivering and the test conducted at the lab has shown he is suspected of the type of bacterial diarrhea.

The hospital has sent doctors to visit the patient's home Thursday afternoon to conduct surveillance and tracing of the diarrhea.

The hospital will also report the case to the Indonesian health authorities as soon as possible, Zhao added.

China sent to Indonesia its 40-member relief team, composed of medical workers and seismological experts, after the quake struck the country's ancient royal city of Yogyakarta and the surroundings on May 27.

The temblor has killed more than 6,000 people and injured thousands of others in the country. Besides, preventing the spread of epidemic disease after the disaster is also a major concern for health workers.
