font size

The Indonesian government will set up 5,000 tents to house emergency classes for students in quake- stricken areas in Yogyakarta and Central Java, a minister said.

The emergency classes would be open starting July 2006, the Antara News Agency quoted National Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo as saying on Saturday.

"We are still calculating the number of tents to be set up. In the first stage, we are likely to set up 5,000 tents," the minister said on Friday.

"We are still calculating it. It depends on our needs in carrying out emergency response, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts," he said.

An estimated 260 elementary and secondary school buildings were totally or seriously damaged in the 5.9-magnitude earthquake on May 27.

Most of the school buildings were located in Bantul and Klaten districts.
