The Zambian government has released over 45 billion kwacha (13 million U.S. dollars) for the rehabilitation of three major roads in the country's Northern province, local media reported Friday.
Three local road contractors, which were engaged to carry out the work, would move on site in two weeks, provincial minister Clever Silavwe was quoted by Zambia News and Information Services as saying in the border city of Nakonde in the province.
Silavwe said the contractors would be maintaining the roads for the next four years to ensure the roads to be in good shape.
The three roads which connect Zambia with Tanzania and Malawi will also be tarred if enough funds have been sourced by the government, the provincial leader said.
Meanwhile, Nakonde District Council Secretary Francis Nkhoma said the rehabilitation of the three roads would accelerate development in the area.
