Chilean president pledges support for Haiti
font size

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet visited a hospital Saturday in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince and pledged continued support for the poor Caribbean nation, according to reports reaching here from Port-au-Prince.

Bachelet, who arrived in Port-au-Prince Friday for a one-day visit, visited the children's ward of the University Hospital in the capital, where she met with doctors and donated a heart monitor and a supply of anesthesia.

She pledged that Chile would continue to provide support for Haiti's health care, education and housing "so that every Haitian has a better chance to have health care, education and housing."

On Friday night, Bachelet met with Haitian President Rene Preval, who thanked Bachelet for Chile's participation in a Brazil-led UN peace keeping mission in Haiti.

Chile's Senate decided last month that the mandate of the more than 600 Chilean peacekeepers would be extended by another six-month.
