U.S. urges Iran to suspend uranium enrichment
font size

The United States urged Iran on Monday to suspend uranium enrichment activities as a prerequisite for any negotiations over its nuclear program.

"The position of the P-5 plus one which was agreed upon by the minister, was full suspension of all enrichment and reprocessing activities. That is a prerequisite to beginning negotiations," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said at a briefing.

McCormack warned that if Iran chooses not to cooperate with the international community, "then the international community, the P- 5 plus one, is prepared to go down the route at the United Nations.

Together with Germany, the P-5, or the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, have put forward a proposal containing both incentives and disincentives to try to solve Iran's nuclear issue.

The proposal has urged Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment in return for any incentives.
