Ugandan First Lady hail NGO' s support to children

Uganda's First Lady Janet Museveni has hailed the efforts of a non-governmental organization (NGO) to improve the life of the poor and disadvantaged Ugandan children, local media reported on Tuesday.

Janet Museveni, who is also member of parliament for Ruhaama county in Ntungamo district, made the comment while receiving a visiting delegation from a Canadian-based NGO named the Sleeping Children around the World on Monday.

The First Lady described the NGO as true allies of Uganda and noted that their work together with that of many other Ugandans would ensure the nation's upcoming generation could live a much better life than the current one.

She commended the Canadian organization's leadership for working to uplift the livelihood of the poor and orphaned children in Uganda, saying they has cherished the spirit of sharing which is a principle to bring blessings to societies.

The Canadian NGO, which has been operating in the eastern African country for six years in cooperation with Inner Wheel Club of Kampala, has extended support to thousands of needy children especially in uplifting their housing conditions.

Mrs. Museveni said that though a lot has changed, many challenges still exist and require concerted efforts to address, whose comment coincided with the World Day against Child Labor.

Meanwhile, the First Lady has received a donation of 10,000 U.S. dollars from the AIDS Health Care Foundation, on behalf of Uganda Women's Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO).

The donation, which was delivered to her, also founder and patron of UWESO, at the State House by the foundation's director of operations in charge of the African bureau, would go into supporting Migyera UWESO Technical Institute.

She said the timely assistance would help the institute to give quality education to the largely disadvantaged children.

UWESO, founded in early 1986, is a response by the women of Uganda in realization that the agony of successive wars, HIV/AIDS and other calamities left many children parentless, destitute and displaced.
