Diverse menu offers food for thoughtSHANGHAI: Western food is proving popular among Muslim leaders and delegates at the Shanghai Co-operation Organization (SCO) staying at the Sofitel Jinjiang Oriental Hotel in Pudong district. However, one northeast Chinese dish is the biggest hit of all. "Laohucai," which means "tiger dish" in English, is made of green peppers, chilli, tomatoes, onion and caraway seeds. According to a source with the hotel, "Laohucai" has been such a hit that it is being served at every meal, including breakfast. The cold dish is quite easy to prepare, as the ingredients only need to be mixed with salt, vinegar and ground pepper. The hotel has set up a special kitchen to prepare halal food. The hotel source said that many Chinese dishes are not suitable for Muslims because of such ingredients as pork, lard and seafood. In addition, the hotel has assigned only male waiters for Muslim guests. All pictures of animals have also been removed from their rooms. Source: China Daily |
