The Malaysian government has redefined the economic role of the Island of Labuan, hoping to turn it into a halal hub as well as an important gas and petroleum hub, an official said Friday.
The Federal Territory of Labuan, which was previously more known as the offshore financial center, should be given a new economic focus, said Federal Territory Minister Zulhasnan Rafique.
"This will attract more people from the Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah to the island," Zulhasnan told reporters here.
Zulhasnan added the plans are part of the government's intention to bring prosperity to all the three Federal Territories, which also include Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (2006-2010).
The government will also make efforts to develop the tourism and education sectors in Labuan.
The Island of Labuan, which used to be part of Sabah state in eastern Malaysia, became a Federal Territory in the year 1984.
