Vast areas flooded as embankment collapses in Bangladesh
font size

Vast areas of Bangladesh's north- west Sirajganj district were flooded as the jerrybuilt embankment collapsed Saturday under strong currents in the Jamuna river, a private news agency UNB reported.

"Over 100 houses were washed away by the floodwater on Saturday morning," the report said, adding that the flood situation in Kazipur sub-district is very serious with most of villages submerged by floodwater.

About 100,000 people of the district have been reported marooned and water-born diseases have broken out in the flood- affected areas. Standing crops on vast tracts of land have been damaged.
