1 killed, 6 injured in shooting and bomb attacks in Thailand

A local politician was killed, four policemen and two villagers were injured in a shooting and a bomb attack in Thai southern border province of Narathiwat Sunday, police said.

Niso Mueka, 48-year-old local politician, was shot dead inside his pick-up truck on a bypass road of Narathiwat's Muang district at 10:20 a.m. (0320 GMT).

Niso was former governor of Narathiwat Provincial Administrative Organization and a canvasser of the Thai Rak Thai Party.

Police said the shooting might be part of the on-going terrorist campaigns or might have been motivated by business or political conflicts.

About an hour earlier, at 9:20 a.m. (0220 GMT), a patrol pick- up truck of policemen in Joh Irong district was attacked by a bomb detonated by mobile phone.

Police said the patrol vehicle was passing the Railway Intersection when the bomb went off. Two women were riding a motorcycle by at the moment and were injured along with the four policemen in the police vehicle.
