Chinese premier calls for peaceful solution to Iran's nuke issue
font size

Visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Sunday in Cairo called on the international community to solve the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomatic measures.

"We hold the opinion that the Iranian nuclear issue should be settled through diplomatic means," Wen told a press conference before he ended his two-day official visit to Egypt.

Wen said Iran has the right to the peaceful use of nuclear power and it should also fulfill its corresponding responsibilities and commitments.

As for the package of incentives raised by the six world powers, Wen said that the proposal has provided a foundation for peaceful settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue.

All concerned parties should seize the opportunity and conduct more flexibility to facilitate the resumption of peaceful talks on the issue as soon as possible, urged the Chinese premier.

European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana on June 6 presented to Iran the new package, agreed by the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany in a meeting in Vienna.

The proposal includes both incentives aimed at persuading Iran to suspend uranium enrichment and possible sanctions if Iran chooses not to comply.

China will continue to exert more efforts and cooperate with relevant parties in its own way to seek a proper solution to the Iranian nuclear issue, Wen said.

Wen arrived in here Saturday afternoon for an official visit to Egypt, the first leg of his seven-nation visit to Africa, which will also take him to Ghana, the Republic of Congo, Angola, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda.
