Chinese premier starts official visit to Uganda

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Kampala Friday on a two-day official visit to Uganda at the invitation of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

Uganda is the last stop of Wen's seven-nation Africa tour, which has already taken him to Egypt, Ghana, the Republic of Congo, Angola, South Africa and Tanzania.

Wen is scheduled to talk with President Museveni, who greeted him at the airport, later Friday. The two sides are expected to sign several cooperation agreements and issue a joint communique during Wen's visit.

The Chinese premier is scheduled to visit the Infectious Diseases Institute, where infectious disease experts train African doctors in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, on Saturday.

Wen is the first Chinese premier to visit Uganda since the two countries forged diplomatic relations in 1962.

Wen's entourage includes Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and Commerce Minister Bo Xilai.

Wen left Beijing on June 17 and is scheduled to return on June 24.
