Philippine president leaves for Europe on official visit

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo left Manila on Sunday for a three-state visit to Europe, aimed at promoting the relationship between the Philippines and the European countries.

Arroyo, who will visit the Vatican, Italy and Spain, designated Vice President Noli de Casto as the caretaker of the government while she is abroad.

In her departure statement, Arroyo issued a series of directives on contingency plans in case of a major eruption of restive Mount Bulusan volcano in Sorsogon, central Philippines.

The Philippine National Police has declared a nationwide red alert for its 115,000-strong police force, a standard operating procedure everytime the president is abroad.

Arroyo is expected to appeal for European businessmen to invest in the Philippines during the eight-day trip, her 32nd trip overseas since assuming the presidency in 2001.

Accompanying her were members of the first family, more than 20 congressmen and some cabinet members.
