Singapore's manufacturing output grew by 10.6 percent year-on-year in May 2006, according to the figures released by the Economic Development Board (EDB) on Monday.

The EDB said that the transport engineering cluster remained the prime growth cluster in May this year as its manufacturing output rose by 35.5 percent in the month.

The precision engineering cluster grew by 11.6 percent in May this year over the corresponding month of 2005 while the electronics cluster rose by 8.6 percent in the same month.

The output of the chemicals cluster and the general manufacturing industries grew by 8.4 percent and 4.1 percent respectively in May over the previous year.

The output of the biomedical manufacturing cluster reversed the contraction in the previous month to rose by a marginal 0.3 percent in the fifth month of this year.

Total manufacturing output grew by 14.7 percent in the first five months of this year as compared with the corresponding period of last year.
