China hails efforts for Chinese abroad to better living, growing condition: FM spokeswoman

China welcomes all efforts by other country's to help Chinese living abroad integrate into the mainstream society, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Tuesday.

Jiang made the remarks at a regular briefing in response to a question concerning the head tax which was imposed by the Canadian government from 1885 till 1923.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered on June 22 a long-awaited formal apology to the Chinese community for the racially motivated tax.

When the head tax failed to curb Chinese immigration the Canadian government passed a law in 1923 that entirely banned Chinese from settling in Canada. That law was repealed in 1947.

The Chinese government has taken notice to this, Jiang said.
