Vietnam will re-consider the possibility of combing the post of state president and that of general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC), said newly-elected state president Nguyen Minh Triet.
"In the future, I think, we will consider the combination of the post of state president and the post of party general secretary when sufficient conditions warrant," Triet told reporters after the 9th session of the 11th National Assembly of Vietnam, the country's top legislature, concluded on Thursday afternoon.
In the past, the CPVCC discussed the combination like what China has already done, but "conditions were insufficient," at that time, he noted.
In April, Nong Duc Manh was re-elected CPVCC general secretary, Triet said, implying that Manh will not retire ahead his five-year term.
On Tuesday, the legislature elected secretary of the Party Committee of southern Ho Chi Minh City Nguyen Minh Triet state president, and first deputy prime minister Nguyen Tan Dung prime minister to replace retiring Tran Duc Luong and Phan Van Khai, respectively.
