CPPCC chairman Jia Qinglin meets HK principal officials

Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said here Wednesday the central government and Hong Kong citizens pin high hopes on the principal officials of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, the Legislative Council (LegCo) and judicial organs.

During a meeting with the principal officials from the HKSAR government, the LegCo and judicial organs, Jia, who is on a visit here, extended greetings to them on behalf of President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao.

Jia said that after overcoming various difficulties, Hong Kong is now in a stable situation with brisk economy. He said the central government spoke highly of the work of the Chief Executive and the HKSAR government, and thanked the officials for the efforts they have made for Hong Kong's social and economic development.

Jia said the implementation of "One Country, Two Systems" is a pioneering work and the officials shoulder heavy responsibilities, as their work concerns with not only the welfare and happiness of the Hong Kong citizens, but also with HK's long-term prosperity, stability and the overall development of the whole nation.

He also urged the officials to effectively implement the concept of "strong governance for the people" put forward by the HKSAR government, and asked all government officials to perform their duties according to the Basic Law.

Jia also required the HKSAR government, the Legislative Council and the judicial organs to coordinate with each other to safeguard the overall interests of Hong Kong and the whole nation.

The CPPCC National Committee chairman also asked the officials to fully understand the needs of the Hong Kong public, work hard and shoulder their due responsibilities.

He expressed belief that the officials present at the meeting will live up to the expectations and build an even better Hong Kong.

Jia arrived in Hong Kong Tuesday morning for a three-day visit at the invitation of the HKSAR government.

During the visit, Jia will also attend activities marking the third anniversary of the signing of the Chinese mainland/Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement.
