Nepal Telecom to distribute CDMA mobile phones
font size

\ Nepal Telecom (NT) stated on Friday that it will start distributing cell phones based on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology by the end of July this year.

Talking to reporters, director of Wireless Telecom Directorate of NT Amar Nath Singh said that the phone lines with limited mobility will be made available in the capital city of Kathmandu Valley in the initial phase.

"We are waiting for the pre-paid recharge cards to arrive. It will take around two to three weeks. As soon as we receive those we will start distribution of the phone lines," he said.

Singh said that NT will issue around 12,000 to 14,000 pre-paid lines in the first phase.

The state-run NT introduced phones based on CDMA technology on Feb. 5 this year. It has been using the system to distribute fixed phone lines till date.

In a race to add new telecommunications facilities and services, NT is going to introduce Internet mobile cards (Y-Max Card) based on wireless telephone technology.

Once the service is introduced, one can have access to email and Internet across the country, where wireless telephony service based on CDMA technology is available.

Moreover, one can download and transfer data at a faster rate than the conventional dial up system, even if there is no telephone and electricity connection.
