Commercial banks in Zambia had total assets worth 7.8 trillion kwacha (2.2 billion U.S. dollars) in the end of 2005, with Barclays topping the 13-member list with 1.587 trillion kwacha (453 million dollars), according to a compilation of data from the financial institutions available here on Tuesday.
State-owned Zambia National Commercial Bank (ZNCB) ranked the second on the chart with 1.537 trillion kwacha (439 million dollars), followed by Standard Chartered Bank with 1.215 trillion kwacha (347 million dollars) and Stanbic Bank with 1.122 trillion kwacha (321 million dollars).
Aggregated assets of the above four banks accounted for 70 percent of the 13 in total.
Bank of China (Zambia), with 112 billion kwacha (32 million dollars) worth of assets, ranked the eighth.
Data shows that the 13 commercial banks had total deposits of about 5.5 trillion kwacha (1.57 billion dollars) against total loans worth 2.5 trillion kwacha (714 million dollars). Combined profit before tax stood at 443 billion kwacha (127 million dollars) .
The banks had non-performing loans of 218 billion kwacha (62 million dollars), according to the compilation.
