WTO breakthrough still possible: NZ PMNew Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark said Tuesday she believes a breakthrough can still be reached at the deadlocked world trade talks in Geneva. Trade ministers again failed at the weekend to reach an agreement in talks aimed at cutting agricultural tariffs and opening global trade in manufacturing and services. Clark told National Radio the negotiations are clearly in crisis and that the Doha trade round is now at a tipping point. She said there will need to be some fairly dramatic movement from the key players in the next few days or weeks for the round to be a success. However, Clark said New Zealand does not believe the gaps between the key players are unbridgeable. Trade Ministers will meet again later this month. The Doha round of trade talks is now in its fifth year. Source: Xinhua |
