Tokyo stocks declined Wednesday, with the key Nikkei stock index snapping its four-day winning streak.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 114.56 points, or 0.73 percent, to end the day at 15,523.94.
The Tokyo Stock Price Index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 12.46 points, or 0.78 percent, to 1,589. 97.
Declining issues led advancing ones 1,143 to 436, with 117 shares ending the day unchanged.
Brokerage, consumer financial, and auto issues declined, though shares that are deemed competitive in the defense field advanced.
Softbank was the most heavily traded issue by value. It declined 35 yen or 1.3 percent to 2,655 yen.
Nippon Steel was the day's volume leader, up 8 yen or 1.9 percent to 440 yen.
Trading volume on the TSE's main section came to 1,523.86 million shares against Tuesday's 1,564.65 million.
The TSE's Second Section index lost 37.53 points, or 0.85 percent, to 4,397.14 on a volume of 88.49 million shares. In Osaka, the near-term September Nikkei 225 index futures contract dropped 80 points to 15,550.
