Johannesburg bourse ends higher

The Johannesburg Securities Exchange's (JSE's) All Share Index extended its gains in the afternoon session on Friday to end up 0.54 percent at 21,358.31, held up in the main by resources counters, which ended 1.19 percent stronger and by banks, up 1.36 percent.

The only laggard on the day was the Industrial Index, which ended down 0.38 percent.

The rand was bid at 7.10 per U.S. dollar from 7.16 when the JSE closed on Thursday while gold was quoted at 631.55 dollars a troy ounce from 633.10 dollars at the JSE's last close.

Total value for the day amounted to 5.3 billion rand from 6.5 billion on Thursday and volumes were recorded at 161 million from a larger 208 million on Thursday.
