font size

Two Pakistani nations and six other Islamists were arrested by Bangladeshi police on suspicions they might have connection with some extremist groups in southern Jhalkathi town Friday night.

The Pakistanis and the others claimed they are the members of a religious group "Dawat-e-Islami" (Invitation Islami) and they were arrested from a mosque in Jhalkathi, 263 km from Dhaka.

Police and the private television channel Ntv on Saturday said the team of eight persons reached Jhalkathi from southern Barisal district in the morning, but their dissimilar talks creates suspicion in the minds of local people, who informed police.

Police then arrested them Friday night and recovered some Islamic books from them.

Police officer Habibul Islam when contacted by phone said they will be interrogated rigorously. A Pakistani national Golam Sabbir was quoted as saying he had visited Bangladesh twice earlier and every time he stayed for three months.
