Colliery flooding traps 6 miners in north China province
font size

Rescuers have stepped up their efforts to save six miners who were trapped in a colliery in north China's Shanxi Province after it was flooded Saturday night, local government sources said on Sunday.

The flooding in the Caojiashan Coal Mine, Liulin County, occurred at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday when 47 miners were working underground. Forty-one miners escaped safe and sound, but six others were trapped, said an official with the Liulin County government.

Rescue workers have been working hard to pump some 2,000 cubic meters of water out of the flooded shaft.

A village-run coal mine, the Caojiashan Coal Mine produces 60,000 tons of coal per year.
