China hosts seminar on non-proliferation
font size

China hosted a seminar on non-proliferation in Beijing Wednesday, stressing its opposition to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

"China opposes the proliferation of WMD and, as a permanent member of UN Security Council, has always taken a highly responsible approach towards non-proliferation issues and contributed its share to international non-proliferation efforts," said Assistant Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai.

Cui made the remarks at the seminar on implementing the UN Security Council Resolution 1540 in Asia and the Pacific.

The resolution "has played an important role in promoting international non-proliferation cooperation and denying non-state actors of access to WMD", said Cui at the opening ceremony of the two-day seminar

UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs Nobuaki Tanaka and officials from nearly 30 countries and international organizations were present at the China-initiated seminar.

Resolution 1540 was adopted by the UN Security Council in April 2004 as the first resolution specifically on non-proliferation.
