The benchmark Nikkei stock index ended Friday's morning session under the key 15,000 barrier as Tokyo stocks were further undermined after oil prices hit fresh record highs and the U.S. equity market stumbled overnight.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 177.27 points, or 1.17 percent, in the morning to 14,920.68.
The Tokyo Stock Price Index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange shed 18.78 points, or 1.21 percent, to 1,532. 25.
