The pile of garbage lying on the streets of Nepali capital continues to rise and stink as the strike called by the Kathmandu Municipal Corporation (KMC) employees entered the fourth day Sunday.
According to Radio Nepal, the KMC employees working on a temporary, daily wage and contract basis have been staging a strike with a demand to give them permanent status under the Municipal Corporation.
Collection of solid waster and works at all the 35 Wards have been halted since the protest began on July 12.
"The struggle began after our memorandum was not addressed even after 20 days of its submission to the KMC Management and the Local Development Ministry," Chairperson of Nepal Transport Workers Association Ramesh Poudel told reporters.
At a discussion held Saturday between the representatives of the KMC employees' union and KMC Management, the agitators made it clear that the strike will come to an end only if the Executive Office, Assistant Executive Office and 14 Departmental Chiefs expressed the commitment to give permanent status to the temporary employees.
Around 700 persons are working on a temporary, daily wage and contract basis under the KMC.
