Japan is preparing to impose economic sanctions on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) after Pyongyang rejected a UN Security Council resolution on its recent missile tests, Japanese media reported Monday.
Tokyo is considering banning cash remittances and freezing the country's assets, according to major Japanese newspapers, including business daily Nihon Keizai.
The DPRK Foreign Ministry on Sunday strongly criticized the UN Security Council resolution, saying the DPRK would not be bound by the resolution.
The UN Security Council resolution approved on Saturday strongly urges the DPRK to return immediately to the six-party talks without precondition, abandon all nuclear-related weapons and programs and return to the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards.
