The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) announced on Wednesday that it will not hold inter-Korean family reunions with South Korea anymore, the South Korean Unification Ministry said.
"Our side is...of the view that it has become impossible to hold any discussion related to humanitarian issues, to say nothing of arranging any reunion between separated families and relatives between the two sides," the ministry quoted Jang Jae On, head of the DPRK Red Cross Society, as saying in a letter to the South Korean Red Cross Association on Wednesday.
"We, therefore, make it clear that it is impossible to arrange the special video meeting on Aug. 15 as scheduled and construct a reunion centre at Mt. Kumgang resort," he added.
Jang criticized South Korea for having laid "a stumbling block" in the humanitarian cooperation between the two sides, "contrary to such desire and expectation of the nation."
"At the (recent inter-Korean ministerial) talks, your side even unilaterally refused to provide rice and fertilizers (to the DPRK), an undertaking which has been underway between the north and the south as part of the humanitarian work on the principle of mutual help," he said.
