Tokyo stocks rise sharply in morning

Tokyo stocks advanced sharply Tuesday morning on buying prompted by steep gains overnight in U.S. shares, driving the benchmark Nikkei above the 15,000 threshold for the first time in about two weeks.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 271.41 points, or 1.83 percent, to end the morning at 15,065.91.

The Tokyo Stock Price Index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 24.14 points, or 1.59 percent, to 1, 538.36.
