Two Zimbabwean immigration officers have been suspended on the allegation of fraudulently issuing 250 foreigners with resident and working permits for 200 U.S. dollars each person, the newspaper The Herald reported on Tuesday. Chief immigration officer Elasto Mugwadi confirmed the decision and said investigations were still going on, the report said.
"Our investigation section is still conducting further inquiries after a senior examiner and a typist were arrested," Mugwadi was quoted as saying.
The underhand dealings came to light last month when files of some permit-holders who wanted to renew their documents could not be found.
Mugwadi said the 250 foreigners were from India, Pakistan, China, Italy, Britain, the United States and several African countries.
