Seychelles presidential election ends smoothly

Presidential election in Indian Ocean archipelago country Seychelles concluded Sunday in peaceful and calm atmosphere with a "satisfactory turnout", an electoral official has said.

"As you might have seen in the polling stations, the election was conducted peacefully and calmly. There was no violence and the voter turnout is quite satisfactory," Chief Electoral Officer Jenny Adrienne told Xinhua.

Officers in the electoral commission are busy arranging the press briefing where the outcome of the election will be announced late night.

Electoral officers are waiting to count the ballots at the Bel Air polling station where President James Michel, who is one of the three candidates, cast his ballot at noon.

An election observer from the United States of America was watching the process a few yards away.

He confirmed to Xinhua that the election was well-organized and no irregularity was found.

"I have not yet communicated with my colleagues, but personally, I found the election was very good. Everything is OK and there is no problem," the observer said, refusing to disclose his name.

He said the turnout rate at that polling station was as high as 88 percent.

The small country is now looking forward to the most important moment in only a few hours.

A ticket-issuing clerk with the Air Seychelles said earlier she would not go to bed until the outcome is announced.

"We are really excited about the election, and we shall wait and see," she said.

The final result will be broadcast live both on TV and radio to the 82,000 people of the country. And the opposition Seychelles National Party is updating the tally on its website.
