Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed sorrow over the killing of more than 50 civilians in an Israeli air raid on southern Lebanese village Qana, Turkey's Anatolia news agency reported on Monday.

The UN Security Council should call for a cease-fire, Erdogan was quoted as saying on the phone with his Lebanese counterpart Fuad Siniora on Sunday night.

"We will discuss the issue at the meeting of Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC)," Erdogan said.

Malaysia called for holding an emergency meeting of the OIC executive committee at the level of heads of state and government on August 3 in view of the continued Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

Erdogan also welcomed the peace plan which Siniora had made public last week.

For his part, Siniora thanked Erdogan for his efforts.

The Israeli air raid on Qana was the deadliest single attack since the conflict began on July 12 following the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas.
