5.2 mln in minority areas shook off poverty in 2005

A total of 5.2 million from minority groups were lifted out of poverty last year thanks to poverty-relief endeavors.

Gao Hongbin, deputy director of the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development, said the aim of newly staged poverty reduction work is poverty-stricken people. With the advancement of poverty alleviation program in a whole village and acceleration of transfer of labor force, great progress was made amongst minority groups in 2005, which is the most fruitful year since the newly staged poverty reduction work was implemented.

China will go on to work on the research and improvement of policies and measures of poverty alleviation among minority group during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan (2006-2010) to try to basically solve problems such as the drinking water of man and animals, going to doctors and enrolling of schools to achieve goals of introducing electricity, roads, telephone and TV so as to improve the living and production conditions.
