Energy consumption goes up in China

In the first half of 2006, China's energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 0.8% compared with the same period of last year, according to an official bulletin issued collaboratively by National Bureau of Statistics of China, the National Development and Reform Commission and Office of the National Energy Leading Group on August 1st.

The bulletin says that energy consumption reduction is still an important and strenuous task for China's main sectors and administration regions and they have a very long way to go to achieve this year's target of energy-consumption reduction. Thus, following the guidelines of State Council, every administration region and sector should take vigorous actions to implement energy-saving responsibility system, to promote structural adjustment, to enhance energy-saving efforts in key areas as well as in the implementation of 10 major energy-saving projects, to enhance the management of energy consumption in major energy-consuming enterprises and to improve energy-efficiency guaranteeing mechanism, in order to achieve the target of energy-consumption reduction in 2006.
