Thirty members of the third Chinese riot police team returned home on Friday from an eight-month UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti as the fourth team left to replace them.

The team arrived at the airport in Jinan, capital of east China's Shandong Province, to be met by their families and colleagues. The other 95 members of the third team will return home on August 13.

They have been supporting the international peacekeeping presence, assisting and training local police in law enforcement, as well as dealing with mass public security emergencies.

The UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti awarded a commendation to the team for their outstanding performance, saying they could be proud of their performance there.

The members of the third team were selected from police units in Shandong.

A 30-member contingent of Chinese police, part of the fourth 125-member riot police team, embarked for Haiti on Thursday. They are expected to be stationed in the Caribbean country for eight months.

Members of the fourth team were selected from border police units in the southeastern province of Fujian, and had an average age of 28.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Thursday during his visit to Haiti that he would call for a 12-month extension of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti.

"We have accomplished a lot, but there is still much more to be done," said Annan at a joint press conference with Haiti President Rene Preval, who took office in May.
