Indonesian police have called on masses of the United Indonesian People for Peace (RIBUP) to behave well in their street rallies to show their solidarity for Palestinian and Lebanese people.
"This is a political action and therefore I call on them to behave well like other demonstrators of other organizations," the Antara news agency quoted West Jakarta Police Chief Bambang Hermanu as saying on Sunday.
At noon on Sunday, tens of thousands of people in Jakarta started a massive street rally organized by RIBUP. Ten of religious, community and political leaders attended the rally.
The solidarity action held to oppose Israeli military aggression called for Indonesian Muslims to mitigate the burden of Palestinian and Lebanese people that have fallen victims of Israeli bombardment.
Israel's 25-day-old bombardment of Lebanon has killed at least 993 people, mostly civilians, and wounded 3,322, reports said.
In Indonesia's second-largest city Surabaya, some 1,500 Muslims held a march Sunday to condemn Israeli attacks in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, ElShinta radio reported.
The demonstrators also raised funds for aid with a "one dollar, one person" campaign that has already raised some 150 million rupiah (16,500 dollars), a radio said.
In the city of Yogyakarta, some 3,000 people from various Islamic organizations gathered near the city's main post office to hold an open protest against Israel and the United States, it said.
