HK sees apparel export value up 61.7 pct in Q2

The apparel industry's domestic export value surged to 6.2 billion HK dollars (794.87 million U.S. dollars) in the second quarter of 2006, up 61.7 percent from that of the same period last year, Hong Kong's Census & Statistics Department said Thursday.

The textiles industry also recorded 51.1 percent growth to 8.7 billion HK dollars (1.12 billion U.S. dollars), while the consumer electrical and electronic products industry saw a 45.3 percent rise to 5.3 billion HK dollars (679.49 million U.S. dollars). However, the machinery, equipment, apparatus, parts and components industry fell 22.4 percent to 4.3 billion HK dollars ( 551.28 million U.S. dollars).

The domestic export value of these four industries accounted for 74 percent of Hong Kong's total domestic exports.

As for other manufacturing industries, the domestic export value classified to the basic metals and fabricated metal products industry grew 10.2 percent to 1.5 billion HK dollars (192.31 million U.S. dollars).
