One person was killed as a rocket launched by Lebanese Hezbollah made direct hit on a house in the Shlomi neighborhood in western Galilee in north Israel on Sunday.

Magen David Adom rescue service said that the victim was a 70- year-old man, and another person was moderately injured in the attack.

In addition, two northern Israeli residents were moderately wounded by shrapnel and another lightly injured when a Katyusha rocket struck the northern town of Safed.

Rockets fired by Hezbollah also hit northern towns of Kiryat Shmona, Ma'alot, Nahariya, and Haifa. No casualties were reported in the attacks for the time being.

The attacks occurred as the Israeli cabinet is ready to approve a UN Security Council ceasefire resolution. The vote is expected to take place at about 1 p.m. (1000 GMT).

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told ministers that he had met with families of the two kidnapped Israeli soldiers, and he hoped they would be freed. However, the truce is not linked to the soldiers' release, the Ha'aretz daily reported.

UN chief Kofi Annan said in a statement early Sunday that a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel would take effect Monday morning, urging leaders of Hezbollah and Israel to halt conflict immediately.
