Chinese Vice-Premier calls for sustainable, harmonious economic growth
font size

Chinese Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan has urged local governments to carry out the macroeconomic control policies adopted by the central government to secure a sustainable and harmonious economic development.

Industrial restructuring and upgrading should be sped up while the fixed assets investment and energy consumption must be reined in, said Zeng during a recent inspection trip to southwest China's Yunnan Province.

After China's economy registered a 10.9 percent growth in the first half of the year, Chinese top leaders have warned of possible overheating and emphasized better macroeconomic control.

The State Council, China's Cabinet, arranged the work plan for the following half of the year at a recent videoconference, urging local government to keep in accordance with the central government, carry out macroeconomic policies from the overall public interest rather than regional benefits.

To curb the overheated fixed assets investment, Zeng said local governments should secure the full effective use of land resources and bank loans and bring only qualified investors into the market.

In term of the development of urban and rural infrastructure facilities, Zeng stressed that farm land must be strictly protected while the principal of land conservation must be abided by.

During the inspection, Zeng stressed the importance of reducing pollutant emission and protecting environment to improve the water quality of plateau lakes. He said local governments should learn to use the market mechanism to channel more capital into the treatment of pollutant and energy-conservation-oriented technical innovation.

He urged the Yunnan Provincial Government in particular to accelerate local geological exploration, make clear mineral resources reserve and take good care of the region's fossil relic of ancient extinct life and unique Karst physiognomy.
