Japan's key Nikkei stock index rallied sharply to clear the 15,800 line for the first time in two months and a half on the back of resurgent economic optimism, with trading undisrupted by a large-scale power outage in the metropolitan area.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average surged 237.26 points, or 1. 52 percent, to end the morning at 15,802.28, after rising to the morning high of 15,837.23, its highest intraday level since May 30.

The Tokyo Stock Price Index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 17.06 points, or 1.08 percent, to 1, 594.98.
