Tokyo shares end mixed

Tokyo shares closed mixed on Tuesday, with the benchmark Nikkei lower while the Tokyo Stock Price Index of all First Section issues rising slightly.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 40.92 points, or 0.26 percent, to end at 15,816.19.

The Tokyo Stock Price Index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange rose 4.10 points, or 0.26 percent, to 1,605. 12.

Construction, heavy machinery maker, as well as consumer finance issues were higher. Brokerage, insurance, rubber and textile issues also advanced. In contrast, oil, mining and paper issues declined.

Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones 957 to 614, with 121 shares ending unchanged.

Trading volume on the TSE's main section came to 1,630.53 million shares against Monday's 1,308.35 million.

The TSE's Second Section index rose 29.29 points, or 0.70 percent, to 4,231.74 on a volume of 62.16 million shares. In Osaka, the near-term September Nikkei 225 index futures contract gained 40 points to 15,870.
