German Chief Prosecutor Monika Harms said on Saturday that the terrorist suspect arrested in the early morning was the one who, with another suspect, planted suitcase bombs on trains in an attempt to trigger explosions at the end of July.
The fingerprints and DNA test results confirmed that the suspect was one of the two bombers who planted two bombs that failed to explode on trains in July, Harms told a news conference in Karlsruhe.
Harms said the plot suggested the suspect was part of a broader terrorist organisation.
"We have every reason to doubt that there were other people involved in the failed terrorist plot," she said. "They formed a group to carry out serious act of violence in Germany."
Police now are trying their best to seek the second suspect, she added.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel described the arrest as "a great success in the fight against terrorism."
The 21-years-old suspect, a student from Lebanon, came to Germany in 2004 and had lived in Kiel since February, 2005. He will be interrogated on Aug. 20.
