Normal life of the Nepali capital city Kathmandu Valley was affected from early Sunday morning due to protests against the price hike of petroleum products.
The major streets of Kathmandu were deserted with only a few vehicles on the roads. Protesters burnt tyres and brought the traffic movement to a halt in various parts of the capital.
The demonstrators damaged a microbus and a taxi in the city. Some protesters were injured when the police resorted to baton- charge on angry protesters attempting to vandalize the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) office.
Most shops and market remained shut and people were seen walking to reach their offices.
The demonstrators said they will continue to protest until the government withdraws the decision to increase the price of the petroleum products.
Meanwhile, one of the major constituents of the ruling Seven Party Alliance, Nepali Congress, has said that the price hike has added extra financial burden to the middle and low-income class people.
The government raised the prices of petroleum products on Friday with the aim of reducing the soaring losses of NOC, the state-owned oil monopolist supplier in Nepal.
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala said on Sunday that some adjustment in the prices of the petroleum products will be carried out in the county.
