    Giant panda cited as global most sightworthy animal

    Baby panda Su Lin celebrates its one-year-old birthday with its mother panda Bai Yun in the San Diego Zoo on August 2, 2006. Currently, there are only about 1,600 wild giant pandas worldwide, mainly in China's Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. According to a recent survey conducted by a global environment protection organization, China's giant panda and the Amazon rainforest in South America are elected as "the most sightworthy animal" and "the most sightworthy natural sight" respectively.Among the global most sightworthy sights, the Amazon rainforest ranks first, and others include Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the Himalayas (or the Everest) on Sino-Nepalese border, the Massai Mara Game Drive Reserve in Kenya, the Grand Canyon in the United States, the Victoria Falls in east Africa, Mangrove forest in the Sundarbans National Park, Bengalash, the Tanami Desert in Oceania, Con Dao in Vietnam and the Niagara Falls in US-Canada border.

    China's "dead sea"

    Two girls read newspapers while float on the water in a salt lake named man-made "dead sea" in Daishan County of east China's Zhejiang Province Aug. 28, 2006. Salt content in water reaches 25 percent and the water density is more than that of the human body, enabling swimmers to float. The salt lake which opened to the public on Monday attraced numbers of tourists.

    Photo taken on Aug. 27, 2006 shows an unique physiognomy of colourful rocks at the riverbed near the Mount Tai in Tai'an, east China's Shandong Province. The physiognomy of colourful rocks covering an area of 10,000 square meters was unveiled after geologicians took one month to clean up the silt. The black amphibolite of these colourful rocks was formed about 2.8 billion years ago. This physiognomy has a high value both for sightseeing and for geological research.

    12 killed in Ningxia's bus accident

    Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans

    The photo, taken on August 22, shows flowers on a cross beside a house damaged by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Approximately 350,000 houses were destroyed or damaged and 1.3 million people left homeless in the Hurricane Katrina which hit the Gulf Coast on August 29, 2005. A further 3 million people lost electricity and 80 percent of the city of New Orleans was flooded. At least 1,815 people died in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi.

    4 blasts jolt Turkey
