Asia's economy growth prospect has remained bright and should grow about 7.25 percent this year, and 7 percent next year, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Rodrigo de Rato said on Friday.
According Singapore's Channel NewsAsia reports, the IMF chief made the remarks in an online conference with journalists.
Rodrigo de Rato said that Asia' economy is the most dynamic region in the world right now, and is growing in importance every year.
It is clear that what is happening in Asia is affecting not only more than two and a half billion people in Asia but also the whole world economy, he said, adding that it is timely that they have these meetings in Singapore to discuss not only the IMF but especially the needs of the member countries.
He noted that in Singapore, they will have the opportunity to discuss the world economy and what is the surveillance role of the IMF in helping countries individually and the world economy as a whole to continue in a growing path in the future.
Expressing his concerns over the current state of oil prices and the collapse of the World Trade Organization (WTO) round of multilateral talks, the IMF chief said that countries should not expect a dramatic correction of oil prices which the world is experiencing today, and economists would have to re-assess their policies in this regard.
The IMF chief is going to give his first briefing in Singapore on September 15th when the IMF/World Bank meetings are in session here.
