EU approves accord with South Korea on cooperation in Galileo
font size

The European Union (EU) transport ministers on Friday adopted a decision to sign an agreement with South Korea on the Asian country's participation in the Galileo global satellite navigation project.

The signing will take place in Helsinki on Sept. 9, in the margins of the EU-South Korea Summit, said the decision-making EU Council.

The sectors for cooperation activities are: radio-spectrum, scientific research and training, industrial cooperation, trade and market development, standards, certification and regulatory measures, ground augmentation systems, security, liability and cost recovery, said the council.

Galileo is rival to the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS). But unlike the GPS system, Galileo is a civilian project.

The European satellite navigation system now has the participation of China and Israel. Other countries are also interested to join in.
