Guyanan woman, her five children killed in house fireA Guyanan woman and her five children died in a house fire on Saturday some 100 km southwest of Georgetown, the capital of the South American country, reports monitored here said. The fire broke out in the bauxite mining town of Linden. According to Guyana Fire Service, the family were trapped inside the two storey house before they were overcome by the blaze. Meanwhile, in the same town a state-owned television transmitting station, part of the National Communications Network, also went up in flames, with local television channels breaking off the air. Police said witnesses heard an explosion before seeing the building on fire with its roof, doors and reinforced concrete walls blown apart. On the same day, another fire was reported to have destroyed the wooden headquarters of the Demerara-Mahaica province, 25 km east of Georgetown.
